The Issue
Simply, the issue is local control of cable television by people who know you
and your neighbors best. In Massachusetts, cities and towns decide what companies
provide cable television to residents. They can choose to have as many cable
providers as their residents want. The process ensures robust competition for
consumers and equal access to services for all residents, regardless of their
backgrounds.
This process has tremendous benefits for residents and families
in Massachusetts. Because of local control, cable companies and local officials
work together to:
- Ensure that networks are built out to all neighborhoods and that access
is available to all consumers/residents.
- Provide free internet and video service to schools, libraries, municipal
and community buildings. These important institutions get a phone bill, but
they don’t get a cable bill.
- Preserve public access channels. High school sports, community access, local
government coverage are all integral parts of what cable delivers to cities
and towns. Local control helps preserve and nurture it.
